Sustainable Lifestyle Tips For Holistic Growth

In today’s world, adopting a sustainable lifestyle is more than just a trend, it’s a necessity for both individual and collective well-being. But what does it mean to live sustainably and holistically?

Let’s explore these concepts and how they intertwine to create a life that nurtures not only ourselves, but also the planet that we call home.

You’ll also find 10 actionable tips to help you on your journey to live a more sustainable lifestyle!

What Does “Sustainable” Mean?

When you look up the definition of sustainability, you’ll find that it means engaging in activities that minimize harm to the environment while also avoiding the long term depletion of natural resources.

It’s about finding ways to meet our current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.

Sustainability focuses on creating a balance that ensures the earth’s health and vitality for years to come.

It’s also about recognizing that the earth is more than just a resource for human consumption. She is a living, thriving entity that supports all life. By allowing her ecosystems to flourish, we ensure not only our survival, but also the well-being of countless other species and the natural world as a whole.

What Does “Holistic” Mean?

The term holistic stems from the Greek word “holos,” meaning whole.

When taking a holistic approach to something, you consider the entirety of that thing rather than focusing on its individual parts.

When applied to us as humans, holistic living means caring for your body, mind, and soul as interconnected elements. You recognize that all parts are important in your well-being.

Why A Sustainable Lifestyle Aligns With Holistic Growth

In my opinion, living holistically inherently involves sustainability. When you honor your body, mind, and soul, you naturally extend that care to others, including animals, plants, and the earth. This is because when you are working on nurturing your own soul, you can’t help but to see the soul in the other beings surrounding us.

Recognizing the soul in all living beings fosters a deeper connection with the environment. And with the recognition of this connection, you realize how important it is to do what you can to care for the earth, so that Mother Earth and those who live upon her can survive and thrive. The earth is not just a resource; it’s our home and provider, deserving of our respect and care.

By adopting a sustainable lifestyle, you align your actions with the values of holistic growth. Just as your body, mind, and soul are all connected, you are also connected to the earth in this human experience. This is why it is so important to make intentional choices that honor not only your well-being but also the well-being of the planet.

You Don't Need To Be Perfect....

A sustainable lifestyle isn’t about perfection; it’s about intention. Every small action counts when approached with care and mindfulness.

By making sustainable choices, you create a life that reflects your values. But remember to give yourself grace. We do live in a modern world where it can be difficult to always be sustainable. The important thing is to be conscious about this and to try your best to live your life in a way that cares for the planet.

Here are some practical tips to help you get started in living a more sustainable lifestyle.

10 Tips For Living A More Sustainable Lifestyle

1. Recycle What You Can

Recycling may sound like a basic tip, but it’s essential when working towards a more sustainable lifestyle. Make it a habit to separate recyclable materials such as paper, glass, and plastics.

A great recycling tip is to look for store drop-off labels on plastic bags that may not be accepted curbside. Many stores, like Target or Lowe’s, have designated bins for these items. You can learn more about this here: How2Recycle

Another great resource is Terracycle. They offer many free recycling programs to handle waste that is not usually accepted curbside. You can explore their offerings here: Terracycle

These are just a few suggestions to help you get started. Stay curious about other ways to recycle, and of course aim to limit single-use packaging when possible.

2. Switch To Reusable Storage Solutions

Invest in reusable storage options such as glass containers and silicone storage bags.

This helps reduce the use of single-use storage items, minimizing waste and promoting sustainability in everyday life.

Also, any way to reduce the amount of contact my food has with plastic makes me happy 🙂

3. Compost Organic Waste

I know this tip isn’t going to be for everyone but if it is possible for you to compost, do it!

My area doesn’t collect compost 🙁

So I do my own composting that I use for my garden. I have both a compost bin and a regular compost pile that I use. I can’t compost as much as I could if my town collected it, but it still helps reduce waste and it’s good for the garden!

Composting transforms food scraps and yard waste into nutrient-rich material, reducing landfill waste and enriching soil health. To get the best results, you want to balance your green and brown materials in the compost. It’s worth taking some time to research the process to ensure your compost breaks down efficiently and provides maximum benefits. I’m kind of a newbie to composting so I’m still learning!

4. Repurpose Leftover Water

Don’t just dump leftover water down the drain! Conserve resources by using water from unfinished drinks to hydrate plants.

If you have pets, you can apply this tip when you change their water by using the old water in their bowl for your plants.

I also use leftover water from my tea kettle for this purpose.

Remember, small actions add up to help the planet and to help you in living a more sustainable lifestyle!

5. Support Ethical Brands

Research companies to ensure they prioritize sustainability, fair labor practices, and eco-friendly materials.

Supporting local businesses also reduces the environmental impact of transportation.

So start to think about where your products are coming from and what the values are of the companies producing them.

6. Donate Instead Of Discarding

Before throwing away clothing, furniture, or other belongings, consider donating them to those in need. This extends the life cycle of items and benefits your community.

My area also has clothing recycle bins so that you can recycle old clothing items that are not suitable for donation, so bonus tip!

7. Get Creative With Meals

Challenge yourself to use what you already have in your pantry and fridge to limit food waste.

I am still food shopping every week but I am always looking in my pantry/fridge to make sure I’m not letting anything go bad/to waste.

Experimenting with leftover ingredients can also help keep you creative in the kitchen so it can actually be fun! At least I think it’s fun, but at the very least it will help you live a more sustainable lifestyle!

8. Switch To Sustainably Packaged Products

Think about the packaging that your personal care products come in.

A nice easy sustainable swap is to use bar soap instead of bottled body wash. Another change I’ve made is using tablets for the dishwasher and washing machine to reduce plastic. If you are looking for suggestions, love the brand Blueland for both their laundry and dishwasher tablets.

These are the dishwasher tablets: Blueland Dishwasher Detergent Tablets

And these are the laundry tablets: Blueland Laundry Detergent Tablets

Swaps like these are a great way to reduce unnecessary plastic waste.

Side note on personal care products and also cleaning products, a great resource for looking up products is EWG as they consider both health and environmental effects when rating different products. I use them all the time to help guide my purchases.

9. Maximize Natural Light

Make the most of windows and natural lighting.

This energy-efficient habit reduces electricity usage and allows you to connect with the natural rhythms of the sun.

I rarely turn on lights during the day, but of course, this will depend on the layout and lighting of your home. So if you have the option, use natural light.

10. Harvest Rainwater

Ok so our last tip isn’t going to be for everyone but if you live somewhere where this is possible, I highly recommend it.

To help conserve water, set up a rain barrel to collect rainwater for watering your garden. This is for your plants, it is NOT for drinking!

I have a rainwater collector on my patio and I rarely need to use the hose to water my potted plants in the summer. Of course this will depend on your location but this is a sustainable lifestyle change that I have genuinely appreciated!

The rainwater collector I have was actually bought pre-owned (another great sustainable tip!). But here is a example of something similar to what I have: Outdoor Rain Barrel

Small Actions Matter!

Always remember that even small actions make a difference. You might think, how much of an impact is collecting rainwater going to have? But every action towards helping the earth is meaningful.

Sustainability is not about being perfect; it’s about progress. There will be times when you have to make a less sustainable choice and that’s okay. Give yourself grace and remember that every small step contributes to a larger impact. I say this because I know that sometimes, when we feel like we’re failing in one area, we may be inclined to give up, and I don’t want you to! At times, I feel frustrated with myself and feel like I’m not doing enough, so I need that reminder too. The reminder that even the small things are helping! The goal is to do what you can, where you can, and to continue learning and growing.

When you commit to a sustainable lifestyle, you may just inspire others to do the same. Your actions demonstrate that living in harmony with the earth is not only possible but fulfilling on a soul level. Sustainable living helps you to cultivate a deeper connection with the world and contribute to its healing which is such a beautiful thing.

I believe that a sustainable lifestyle is a path to holistic growth, weaving together the threads of mindfulness, respect, and conscious living. It’s about recognizing the interconnectedness of all life and making choices that honor that connection.

Start small, stay consistent, and remember that your efforts matter. Together, we can create a more sustainable and harmonious world.
