Masculine Vs Feminine Energy

We all have both masculine and feminine energy in us regardless of gender and we need both of these energies to help us to interact in this world. Today we’ll explore a comparison of masculine vs feminine energy to better understand the qualities each brings and what they represent. Finally, we’ll look at how yoga interprets these energies and how we can integrate both energies together.

What Is Feminine Energy?

Feminine energy helps us reconnect with aspects of ourselves that have often been overlooked or suppressed in modern times. Let’s look at some of the qualities that this energy brings about.

Feminine energy is very fluid in nature. It allows us to go with the flow, be open to change, and to move easily with life’s currents. This is very helpful because life is always moving and changing. Feminine energy helps us embrace the inevitable shifts of life and keeps us open to new ideas as they emerge. This openness also extends to connecting with other people, allowing them to be who they are and embracing that with love.

This energy also helps us stay connected to our emotions, which are very fluid when we are feeling them and expressing them in a healthy manner. Here you can see the relationship to fluidity and emotions. Being in touch with feminine energy helps us experience our emotions fully and release them. If you’re closed off from this energy, you may find it difficult to connect with what you’re feeling or you may tend to get stuck in one emotion and have a hard time letting it go.

Feminine energy also relates to creativity. Creativity is another very fluid type process and our feminine energy is what helps us to create. Fluidity is key here because we often get stuck thinking that you need to be artistic to be creative. There are many ways to tap into your creativity besides the arts and besides procreating so remember that!

You can also think of feminine energy in a mothering way because it’s also related to being nurturing and caring. When you care for others or nurture others, this is your feminine energy coming into play. And this is not limited to being a mother in the traditional sense, there are again many ways to nurture and care for all life forms around us.

Feminine energy can show up in many ways, but these are some of the core qualities it embodies. It is connected with the element of water and with the moon, which can make it easier to remember what this energy is all about. Think of the flow of water or the flow through the phases of the moon when embracing feminine energy.

What Is Masculine Energy?

Lately, there has been a growing desire to return to feminine energy. This is important because modern culture often celebrates masculine qualities while sometimes suppressing the feminine. Still, it’s essential to remember that we need masculine energy too.

Masculine energy relates to the element of fire so that already gives you an idea of how this differs from our feminine energy. Masculine energy is what gives us confidence and what gives us the drive to get things done.

When we say masculine vs feminine energy it does kind of make it sound like they oppose each other when in reality, they work together. Think about it this way, our feminine energy helps us to create what we want and helps us go through that creative process, while our masculine energy is what helps us to bring this creativity out into the world. We need our masculine energy to help us to interact with the world because it gives us that drive to get things done.

While the feminine is more related to nurturing and caring qualities, the masculine is more related to being a protector and to being a leader. Masculine energy also helps us to create structure. While the feminine is flowy, the masculine helps us to be stable.

Some other beautiful qualities of masculine energy are determination, confidence, and being able to stay focused on a task so we can bring about stability and structure. It also allows us to be more logical which we for sure need at times!

Masculine vs Feminine Energy In Different Genders

This was stated in the beginning of this post, but we are coming back to it again because it’s so important. We ALL have both masculine AND feminine energy regardless of gender! Finding balance between these two energies helps you to feel more centered.

The more in tune you become with yourself on an energetic level, the easier it is to recognize when you may need to lean into one energy more than the other.

Here’s some examples to help you see the importance of balancing these energies.

When there’s too much feminine energy and not enough masculine, we might become overly guided by emotions and allow our feelings to take the lead without having logic (which is more masculine) stepping in to balance us. On the other hand, when there’s too much masculine energy, we may become overly rigid or focus too much on productivity, and we find ourselves disconnected from our emotional needs. This is why both energies are essential, they complement and balance one another, helping us feel aligned in this human experience.

Masculine vs Feminine Energy In Yoga

We do find the idea of masculine and feminine energy within yoga.

Yoga talks about how we have many different channels of energies running through us, these channels are called ‘nadis’. You can think of nadis like little rivers of energy flowing throughout our being. Two of the major nadis are our masculine energy and our feminine energy.

Our masculine energy is called ‘pingala’ and it’s located on the right side of our body. Our feminine energy is called ‘ida’ and it’s located on the left side of our body. Pingala and ida are two major nadis or energetic channels that are talked about in yoga. These two channels of energy end and connect at the third eye. The third eye is where you can connect with ‘genderless’ energy, rising beyond the masculine and the feminine.

Finding Balance

To review, we have our masculine energy ‘pingala’ on the right and we have our feminine energy ‘ida’ on the left. We also have a central channel of energy called ‘shashumna nadi’. The goal is to allow our energy to flow up this central channel, but, to be able to access shushumna nadi, the central channel which is going to connect us with divine energy, we first need to bring the feminine and masculine into balance. We need to clear these energy channels from any blockages in order to connect with this central energy.

Remember that we need both the feminine and the masculine to interact on this human plane, so they shouldn’t be ignored. These energies help us to interact with the world we live in and keeping them balanced helps us to feel and show up in life in a centered way.

But balancing these energies does go beyond this, because to connect with higher energy, divine energy, we need to start to get past the masculine and feminine and connect with our central energy channel. For our spiritual growth, we do need to start to go beyond our gendered energies to be able to feel into divine energy. But remember, first the masculine and feminine need to be balanced!

Final Thoughts

The main takeaway here is that we all hold both masculine and feminine energies within us and we need both to engage and interact with the world around us. These energies are not something to ignore or bypass on our way to divine connection; they are divine in their own right and are vital to fully embracing this human experience.

Part of our spiritual and energetic work is to honor and bring these energies into balance.

Yet, the higher message is to move beyond them at times, to connect with that divine, genderless energy that flows through the central channel. From there, we align with pure divine energy, which exists within us as well.
