How To Work On Your Third Eye Chakra - 6 Tips!

The concept of the third eye chakra may sound mystical, but it’s actually accessible to everyone. Here, you’ll learn all about the third eye and discover methods to enhance it, allowing you to amplify your intuition and foster inner connection.
If you’re new to the chakras and want to learn more about the basics, read this post here: What Are The Chakras?
What is the third eye chakra?
The third eye chakra is the 6th chakra of the 7 chakra system. The location of this energy center is between your eyebrows and a little bit further up. Basically, it’s in the center of your forehead. A gland in your brain called the pineal gland is also related to the location of the third eye.
The third eye is closely intertwined with our spiritual essence and is strongly linked to our intuition. By aligning with this energy, you can access your innate intuitive nature.
This is where you can ‘see the unseen.’ By this I mean seeing what you can’t see with your physical two eyes. It’s about tapping into subtleties that we often miss when we are only focused on the physical world.
Within this energy center, you transcend mere physical sensations, enabling an expansion of perspective.
Opening your eyes to the 'unseen'
I understand that for many, this might appear unconventional. However, such perspectives are a product of the societal framework that shapes our thinking.
This is often why children can more easily embrace their intuition and establish connections with the spiritual world – they haven’t yet been conditioned to suppress these abilities.
As we transition into adulthood, societal norms encourage us to prioritize what is deemed “real.” Society defines reality within the bounds of the tangible material world. Yet, our reality extends beyond the visible spectrum. Exploring the principles of quantum physics can shed light on how science supports these ideas.
Hence, for many of us, there’s a need to reintegrate spirituality into our lives and reopen our minds to the unseen facets. Though this may sound challenging; it’s accessible to each and every one of us if we choose to put in the time and effort.
Third Eye Chakra = Ajna Chakra
In Sanskrit, the third eye chakra is known as ‘ajna chakra.’ This term can be translated as either ‘to perceive’ or ‘to command.’
This signifies the point at which we come to the understanding that we extend beyond the limitations of our physical body and mind. Instead of being governed by the body and mind, it is our soul or spirit that holds the reins of control.
This profound connection with your soul/spirit can be established through the gateway of the third eye.
Third eye element: ether or light or both?
The element that is often associated with the third eye chakra is light. Light is the fastest known thing in our universe. Think of the saying ‘moving at the speed of light,’ meaning ‘moving really freaking fast.’ We can’t even see some forms of light with our physical eyes, but it doesn’t mean it’s not there.
This is just as the information we learn with our third eye, it may be unseen but it doesn’t mean it’s not real.
I often associate the 3 upper chakras with the element of ether in general as they are the spiritual energy centers. This is the center of intuition so choose what feels right for you.

The meeting place of the feminine and masculine
The third eye is where our right side energy and left side energy come together.
The right side energy channel (also known as pingala) is related to masculine energy and the left side energy (also known as ida) is related to feminine energy. We all have both masculine and feminine energy within us regardless of gender and the third eye is where both come together.
This energy center goes beyond what we see in our world and is beyond gender; it is all about connection and union.
What does an unbalanced third eye chakra look like?
Remember, this is looking deeper into our energetic connection to the mind and body. While working with your energy can most definitely create profound effects, it’s not intended to replace medical treatment. If you’re experiencing physical, mental, or emotional symptoms, consult with your medical doctor.
Like any other chakra, the third eye can become underactive or overactive but I will say that I find that most people on average will have an underactive third eye due to societal norms trying to turn us away from our intuitive nature.
Third eye energy imbalance can appear physically in the form of headaches or issues with sleep.
The third eye is closely related to sleep as it is in the location of the pineal gland. The pineal gland is involved in our circadian rhythm; you can think of this rhythm as our internal clock which controls our sleep and wake cycles.
Some ways you may mentally or emotionally see a blocked third eye would be someone who is narrow minded or really set in their ways. They can’t see others’ perspectives and are not open to challenging their own ideas.
A blocked third eye may also look like someone who has difficulty coming up with new ideas or planning. The third eye is where we ‘dream.’ This is where we come up with an idea and then the lower chakras help us bring this idea into the world if we so choose.
The third eye is where we think of the ideas that we want to manifest.
Here’s a simple example: I thought that I wanted to share a chakra series on my blog. My third eye is the energy that started this idea and my lower chakras have helped me bring this into the world.
Lastly, the third eye can become blocked if there is a general lack of spirituality.
Next, you’ll learn some ways to work on bringing balance to the third eye chakra.
The main way to connect with this energy center is to go within in order to see beyond the material world into the spiritual world. Easier said than done, so these tips are here to help you to start to connect with this energy center.
6 Ways To Balance The Third Eye Chakra
1. Child's Pose
Child’s pose is wonderful for connecting with the third eye. This yoga pose is really about bringing balance to this energy center as it can be helpful for both an overactive or underactive third eye.
Any variation of child’s pose will work, choose what is best for you and your body.
The reason this pose works is that you are resting the third eye region on the earth. This can help stimulate energy flow here. You can also do this with some movement for extra stimulation here, so basically move your head as if you were slightly shaking it no.
Remember, this is the energy center of intuition so do what feels best for you. Do you feel the connection with the third eye more with stillness or with movement? Do you want to keep your palms facing up or down? There’s no right or wrong answer, it’s about connecting within to see what is best for you.
If you happen to have an overactive third eye, you can still use this pose and just imagine any excess energy from the third eye releasing into the earth.

2. Meditation
Meditation can be used in specific ways for all of the chakras, but it is an especially powerful practice for connecting with the third eye chakra.
The third eye is the center of our intuition which is why meditation is so powerful here.
Our physical eyes can distract us from seeing with the third eye so what better way to connect here then to actually close our two physical eyes and bring our attention within. In meditation, you are reconnecting with your soul and reminding yourself that there is ‘more than the eyes can see’.
You can keep this meditation simple by just closing your eyes and placing your awareness on the space in the center of your forehead. As you connect deeper with the third eye chakra, maybe you will start to be able to feel the energy here!
As your connection with the third eye grows, the easier it will be to connect here while you are going about your day.
3. Chant "Om"
Each chakra is associated with a specific sound and the sound of the third eye is one that you’re probably already familiar with! The sound here is “Om.”
Om is a well known mantra for good reason. Om is known as the sound of the universe. By chanting “Om,” you are aligning with the universe’s vibration. You are acknowledging forces that are unseen. With “Om,” you are opening yourself up to expanding your awareness.
For this mantra, say it aloud to connect with the third eye. Repeat “Om” as frequently as you intuitively feel necessary. Using your intuition to guide you will only make this practice even more powerful for the third eye.

4. Start To Notice & Acknowledge Synchronicities
Coincidence or synchronicity? We often label things as coincidences because this is what society teaches us, but is it really only a coincidence or is it something more?
A synchronicity is a connection through space and is when we are tuned in beyond the 5 senses.
An example of a synchronicity could be seeing a specific number over and over again. Another example is thinking of a friend who you haven’t talked to in months and then they call you one minute later.
I’m not saying that every coincidence is a synchronicity, but I am saying that not everything is a coincidence.
The more you open yourself up to receiving information from space or the spiritual world, the more you will experience these synchronicities.
Usually when a ‘coincidence’ happens and your response is, “that was freaking weird,” it probably is a synchronicity 🙂
My sisters and I have synchronicities happen all the time. My mom laughs because if one of us calls her to complain that we are feeling nauseous, there’s a high likelihood that she’s getting a call from another sister with the same complaint in the next few minutes. You just want a little motherly sympathy when you’re feeling crappy lol!
This is just a fun example, but not so fun when we are nauseous….there are many ways you can experience this. The more you tap into and recognize these more ‘mundane’ synchronicities, the easier it will be to notice communication from the spiritual world.
5. Alternate Nostril Breathing
There are different types of pranayama or breathwork that can help to balance the third eye.
Alternate nostril breathing is an example of a great breathwork practice for this purpose.
The meeting point of our left side energy and right side energy is at the third eye. By working with alternate nostril breathing, you are working to balance your masculine and feminine energy at the third eye region.
There is a specific way to do this breathwork practice which I’m not going to write out here because it would probably be boring and it’s easier to learn through video. I teach this breathing technique in one of my yoga classes on youtube. You can do the entire practice or if you just want to learn this breath, you can skip to time 12:40. Click here for the practice.

6. Connect with the color purple.
The color associated with the third eye is purple, more specifically indigo. (Think like a deeper purple color as opposed to a light purple.)
Having the color purple around you or wearing purple is a wonderful way to remind your body and mind of your intention to create balance in the third eye.
An amethyst crystal can be great for this if you like having crystals around you!

The mystical nature of the third eye chakra definitely makes for an intriguing energy center.
The third eye opens a door to understanding the intricate balance between our physical existence and our spiritual essence.
By embracing concepts that go beyond the ‘conventional’, we invite a deeper connection with our intuition and create a broader perception of reality.
May the wisdom of the third eye allow you to perceive the beauty in both the material and spiritual worlds and allow you to recognize their intricate interconnection.
