How To Open Your Crown Chakra
The crown chakra, the simplest of all the chakras but the one we so often struggle to connect with. In this post, you’ll learn all about the beautiful energy surrounding this area plus 6 tips on how to help open your crown chakra.
If you’re new to the chakras and want to learn more about the basics, read this post here: What Are The Chakras?
What Is The Crown Chakra?
We’ve made it to the last energy center of the 7 chakra system, the crown chakra!
The crown chakra is located at the top of your head, your crown! The Sanskrit name for the crown chakra is sahasrara chakra.
Crown Chakra = Sahasrara Chakra
When I say that this energy center is the simplest of all the chakras, I say it because it is truly about one thing, connecting with something greater than you. Whether you call this greater energy the divine, the universe, or something else, that’s simply what this energy is all about. It’s about recognizing the divine’s presence within the world and within you.
I see the crown chakra as a portal to access divine energy.
The crown chakra relates to consciousness. Many individuals go about their lives seemingly “unconscious.” By this, I don’t mean they are physically asleep, but rather, they could be seen as spiritually asleep. They fail to recognize the profound interconnection we all share through divine energy. When you are truly conscious, you become attuned to the divine both in the world around you and within yourself.
This is precisely why the crown chakra is associated with enlightenment. When the crown chakra is open, you’ll sense the presence of divine energy within you and you’ll be able to catch a beautiful glimpse of enlightenment. Enlightenment isn’t exclusive to monks etc; it’s an experience accessible to anyone willing to invest time and effort in their spiritual growth.
Element of Crown Chakra
The element associated with the crown chakra is often said to be thought.
I have also seen the element described as ‘pure spirit’.
As someone with OCD, I don’t really resonate too much with thought as the element here, to me, pure spirit makes more sense. You can use what resonates with you.
What Does A Balanced Crown Chakra Look Like?
When the crown chakra is balanced, you are truly connected with your spirituality. You see the unity throughout our world and see the divine in all living beings.
When the energy of the crown chakra is balanced, you are able to feel peace and happiness in even the most mundane moments. It’s fine to do things that you find fun/exciting but the truth is that a lot of our life is going to be spent doing things that are more mundane. This isn’t a bad thing but for some reason, humans tend to feel boredom in the mundane and are constantly feeling the need to be ‘entertained’ or ‘excited’. Boredom is a serious issue in modern day.
We are here to experience being human. Yes, it’s great to experience things that are exciting like traveling etc but that shouldn’t be your sole source of joy. So many people are always chasing the next thing and they can’t sit and do ‘nothing’.
To have a balanced crown chakra, you need to find peace and happiness in times that may be labeled as ‘boring’.
So, can you find peace, happiness, and beauty in the mundane? It’s there and finding it will help balance your crown chakra.
What Happens When The Crown Chakra Is Blocked?
Remember, this is looking deeper into our energetic connection to the mind and body. While working with your energy can most definitely create profound effects, it’s not intended to replace medical treatment. If you’re experiencing physical, mental, or emotional symptoms, consult with your medical doctor.
Most likely an imbalanced crown chakra is going to be due to low energy or blocked energy. An overactive crown chakra is more rare, but a possibility in this scenario would be someone who has difficulty being present in the physical/material world. This is because this energy center is so spiritually focused.
More than likely an imbalance in the crown chakra will be when the energy here is low or blocked. A blocked crown chakra may present as boredom, disconnection, or depression.
We are all connected to the divine but when the crown chakra is closed off, it can be difficult to recognize this connection which can lead to a feeling of disconnection.
Opening through the third eye will help to open through the crown chakra as the third eye is all about ‘seeing the unseen’. You can learn more about the third eye chakra in this post: How To Work On Your Third Eye
Now let’s look at some more specific ways you can open your crown chakra.
6 Ways To Open Your Crown Chakra
Meditation, meditation, meditation!
This is the best way to open your crown chakra. Meditation opens your awareness beyond the physical realm. Meditation helps you to feel and see your connection with the divine or with the universe.
Practicing meditation is key to keeping the crown chakra balanced. It frees and opens your mind to be able to see your connection to the spiritual realm.
The times that I have personally caught a glimpse of enlightenment have all been in meditation. It is a powerful spiritual practice.

2. Connect With An Energy That Is Greater Than You
This comes back to the core of the crown chakra, connecting with a force greater than you be it the divine, the universe, or whatever name you’d like to use.
You most definitely can find this connection within meditation but to take this a step further, can you remind yourself of this connection throughout your day?
Can you remember the divine connection throughout our world?
Can you remember your connection to the divine?
3. Silently Chant "Om"
The bija mantra associated with the crown chakra is “Om” just like it is for the third eye. The difference here is that you chant it silently in your mind.
This relates back to the element of the crown chakra being thought or pure spirit.
By chanting “Om” silently, you are attuning to the unification of the universe.
4. Challenge Current Paradigms
Opening yourself up to new ideas and thought patterns is a wonderful way to work on the crown chakra especially when it comes to topics surrounding spirituality.
Learn new information and don’t be afraid to challenge your previous ideas.
This exploration will help you find what truly resonates with you in terms of your spiritual practice and will help you to open your crown chakra.
5. Connect With The Color Violet or White
The color associated with the crown chakra is purple or more specifically violet. This chakra is also associated with the color white as divine energy is often described as pure white light.
I personally connect more with white as the color here but choose what resonates with you.
Having the color violet or white around you or wearing violet or white is a wonderful way to remind your body and mind of your intention to connect with your crown chakra.
6. Deepen Your Connection With Yoga Poses
Instead of doing a specific yoga pose for the crown chakra, try this: connect deeper with the meaning of each pose.
What I mean by this is to really tap into the qualities that each pose brings. This can help you tap into your connection with all beings in the universe.
For example, when you do tree pose, can you really tap into the qualities of a tree in order to illuminate your divine connection with them?
You can also do this with the poses that are embodying certain animals like fish pose or pigeon pose. Through practicing these yoga poses, can you feel your connection to these other living beings in our world?
This is a really lovely way to work on opening the crown chakra.
Remember, all of the chakras are important to keep balanced. They all have a purpose and one is not more important than the other.
In your journey to balance and open your crown chakra, remember that it’s a process that requires patience and dedication. We are living a human experience so it can be challenging at times to keep the crown chakra open but with practice, this will become easier.
Embrace the beauty of the interconnectedness of all beings. As you continue to nurture your crown chakra, you’ll find yourself on a transformative path towards higher consciousness and spiritual enlightenment.
